Artist's Statement

My intention, is to make a powerful piece of art, in this moment, representing those of us who stand together.

In thinking about my greatest fear for America, it is not policy or laws that come and go… it is the fear of losing the right to vote in a democracy. I found solace in focusing on a simple pledge, a line in the sand, something I hope is truly nonpartisan. Can we gather everyone who is for democracy?

It started with a small diverse gathering of folks across the US wanting a photo to feel together without having our faces shown. I thought of all the teams who put their hands in the center of a huddle. After I made the first image of eight hands around a fall colored heart, it gave me a strength and hope I wanted to share with others.

At first glance, it does not seem like much. But one thing history tells us is that people start shrinking in fear before anyone in power ever takes repressive action. Putting a hand in the circle is an anonymous yet powerful way to use our voice, our power, our political space, and more poetically… our hands, to show that we are many.

If you want to be a part, send me a photo of your hand, palm down, and I will add it to the circle. The circle will continue to grow like flower petals.

To those who are despondent,

I hope it gives them comfort.

To those fighting,

I hope it gives them strength.

To those in opposition,

I hope it gives them pause.

Thank you and may this project bring you peace,

-  a hand in the circle
